What is it?

Geneva International Film Festival Future is Sensible Award 2025 Laurel

Ancestors premiered at IDFA Doclab in November 2024 and is now ready to book for your event!

Ancestors is a unique journey six generations into the future, where you’ll explore how today’s choices shape tomorrow’s world.

Using AI and guided by your smartphone, you’ll connect with others in unexpected ways to discover possible futures and face big questions around climate, technology, and society.

It’s fun, immersive, and will leave you thinking long after the experience ends. Join us for an adventure into the future!

How does it work?

  1. First, you take a selfie. Then, using AI, we create the face of a virtual child from your selfie and that of another (random!) audience member, making both of you virtual parents.
  2. Next, both of you progress as grandparents of a virtual grandchild together with another couple.
  3. Eventually, the whole audience becomes one big family! The ancestors of a virtual great-great-great-great-grandchild.

Just imagine the conversations you’ll have about how to take care of future generations.

Our creative director Steye Hallema developed the initial concept of Ancestors together with the visual artist Hanna Haaslahti (Finland) during the Sundance New Frontier Lab, after which they both felt the need to tell this important story in their own best way. So you might be able to experience or book both works one day.

Check out Hanna’s wonderful work here.

Ancestors is made possible thanks to Film Fonds Immerse/Interact, Fonds21 and Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie.
