What is it?

We’re (finally!) aware that social media companies make money from our data, but do we fully understand what that means? In this provoking and often absurd interactive experience, we reveal in real time the power these companies have. We sort the audience based on their own data and illustrate first hand how it works.

The Social Sorting Experiment is a worldwide hit in a variety of settings, including festivals, conferences, business events and universities. In addition to an in-person experience, we also offer it online via Zoom.

How does it work?

  1. Via a secure website, the audience logs in with their mobile browser and creates a profile.
  2. Assisted by digital cues, our host guides the collective through one-on-one interactions.
  3. The interactions are interspersed with questions in which the audience members anonymously rate each other.
  4. The audience is then sorted by various data points, illustrating how they are ranked. (Don’t worry, we keep it fun!)
  5. Finally, a perfect match is found for each individual, striking a richer conversation than any other networking event could offer.
